Delmadinone: Uses, Dosage and Side Effects
Overview
Progestogens suppress FSH and LH production.
Uses of Delmadinone
• Treatment of hypersexuality (male dog and cat).
• Treatment of prostatic hypertrophy.
• Management of peri-anal gland adenomas.
• Treatment of hormonally driven canine aggression.
Dose of Delmadinone in Dogs and Cats
Dogs:
- Benign prostatic hypertrophy: 1.5–2 mg/kg (dogs <10 kg); 1–1.5 mg/kg (10–20 kg); 1 mg/kg (>20 kg) i.m., s.c. repeated after 8 days if no response.
- Animals that respond to treatment may need further treatment after 3–4 weeks.
Cats:
- Hypersexuality: 1.5 mg/kg repeated after 8 days if no response.
- Animals that respond to treatment may need further treatment after 3–4 weeks.

Side Effects of Delmadinone in Dogs and Cats
- Transient reduction in fertility and libido.
- Polyuria and polydipsia.
- Increased appetite.
- Hair color change at the injection site.
Contraindications of Delmadinone in Dogs and Cats
- Avoid in patients with severe renal or hepatic impairment or diabetes mellitus.
Some Notes:
- Because delmadinone has a major calming effect, dogs that show a decreased level of aggression when treated with it will not necessarily indicate the same behavioral reaction to surgical castration.
- The cortisol response to ACTH stimulation is significantly suppressed after just one dose of delmadinone.
