Oclacitinib In Dogs & Cats: Uses, Dosage and Side Effects

Overview

  • Inhibits janus-kinases (particularly JAK1) thereby inhibiting the function of a variety of cytokines, particularly proinflammatory cytokines associated with the allergic response.

Uses of Oclacitinib

  • For the treatment of pruritus associated with allergic dermatitis in dogs.
  • Dogs receiving long-term oclacitinib should be monitored regularly with complete blood counts and serum biochemistry.
  • The optimum dose, pharmacokinetics and safety profile of oclacitinib in cats have not been studied in detail.

Dose of Oclacitinib in Dogs and Cats

Dogs, Cats:

  • Atopic dermatitis: 0.4–0.6 mg/kg p.o. q12h for 14 days, then q24h for maintenance.

You Should Give:

Side Effects of Oclacitinib in Dogs and Cats

  • Diarrhoea, vomiting, anorexia, new cutaneous or subcutaneous swellings, lethargy, polyphagia, polydipsia and increased aggression have all been reported.
  • May increase susceptibility to infection and demodicosis.
  • May increase the incidence of histiocytomas.
  • Proteinuria has been reported in dogs on chronic therapy.

Contraindications of Oclacitinib in Dogs and Cats

  • For use in dogs >12 months old and >3 kg body weight.
  • Not to be used during pregnancy or lactation.
