Afoxolaner: Uses, Dosage and Side Effects
Overview
Afoxolaner acts on ligand-gated chloride channels, especially those that are controlled by the neurotransmitter GABA, to prevent the transport of chloride ions between synapses and across cell membranes.
Uses of AfoxolanerÂ
- It is used to treat dogs for flea and tick infestations. kills ticks in 48 hours and fleas in 8 hours.
- Treatment for canine demodicosis and sarcoptic acariasis.
Dose of Afoxolaner in Dogs and Cats
Dogs
- Apply each month. The tablets deliver afoxolaner at a dose of 2.5–6.9 mg/kg.
Cats

Side Effects of Afoxolaner in Dogs and Cats
- Lethargy, anorexia, pruritus, and neurological symptoms (convulsions, ataxia).
- Rare gastrointestinal symptoms (vomiting, diarrhea).
Contraindications of Afoxolaner in Dogs and Cats
Do not use in dogs <8 weeks old or <2 kg body weight.
Some Notes:
- The tablets should not be divided.
- Although studies in laboratory animals have not demonstrated teratogenic effects or any adverse effect on male or female reproductive capacity, the US product label states that safe use in breeding, pregnant, or lactating dogs has not been evaluated.
