Animal-Centric Care and Management

Animal-Centric Care and Management Book PDF

Animal-Centric Care and Management

Animal-Centric Care And Management Book Pdf

By Dorte Bratbo Sørensen, Sylvie Cloutier and Brianna N. Gaskill

Animal-Centric Care and Management Book PDF. The concept of the 3Rs (Refinement, Reduction and Replacement) has been used as a framework for improving the welfare of laboratory animals for the last half century. By establishing an animal-centric view on housing and management, Animal-centric Care and Management: Enhancing Refinement in Biomedical Research takes Russell and Burch’s definition of Refinement as “elimination of inhumanities” and goes further. Rather than fitting animals into experimental conditions, it encourages readers to adjust conditions to better meet the behavioral, emotional, physical, and physiological needs and preferences of the animals. The team of expert authors, from the fields of laboratory animal science, ethology, biology as well as animal training, provide ideas for creating housing conditions and handling procedures that induce, to the best of current abilities and knowledge, a long-term positive state of mind in the animals under our care.

This book is written for animal caretakers, animal health technicians, researchers, animal facility managers, laboratory animal veterinarians, and anyone who engages in work with living experimental animals or is interested in the continuous improvement of laboratory animal welfare. This interdisciplinary guide will act as a catalyst, resulting in multiple viewpoints and fields collaborating to optimize laboratory animal welfare.

Mammal Anatomy: An Illustrated Guide

Mammal Anatomy: An Illustrated Guide pdf

Mammal Anatomy: An Illustrated Guide

Mammal Anatomy: An Illustrated Guide Pdf

By Anthony D. Barnosky

Mammal Anatomy: An Illustrated Guide PDF is represented in the 14 articles contained in this resource. Each article ranges in length from 16-24 pages and discusses one particular species or group. Besides humans, the mammals that are discussed include chimpanzees, dolphins, elephants, giraffes, gray whales, grizzly bears, kangaroos, lions, manatees, seals, squirrels, wolves, and zebras. Arranged alphabetically, each article begins with a family tree taxonomy, discussion of related animals, and an overview of featured systems. These systems (external, skeletal, muscular, nervous, circulatory, respiratory, digestive and excretory, and reproductive) receive detailed treatment on subsequent pages. Articles are signed, well written, and provide detailed information. Each article also includes numerous full-color photographs, charts, and diagrams. Sidebars and boxes highlight interesting facts. A glossary, an index, and resources for further study conclude the book. The volume is a repackaging of the publisher’s multivolume Animal and Plant Anatomy (2006). Libraries already owning the larger set will not need to purchase this newer title as it does not provide supplemental material. Though this is a useful, interesting, and browsable volume, because of the limited number of mammals covered, only schools and libraries where resources on animal anatomy are highly requested or that have large budgets will want to consider it.

Environmental Impacts of Pasture-Based Farming

Environmental Impacts of Pasture-Based Farming

Environmental Impacts Of Pasture-Based Farming Pdf Download

By R. W. McDowell

Focusing on the different types of pastoral farming and their impact on the environment, Environmental Impacts of Pasture-based Farming takes a broad view of the subject, whose treatment in texts is often biased towards confined animal or grain based systems. The text is organised into two sections, the first addressing issues facing environmental quality, namely soil, water and air quality and socio-economic impacts. The second section offers commentary on how pastoral sectors influence environmental issues. With highly tuned farm productive systems comes the risk of environmental impacts, and the purpose of this text is to highlight the areas in which these risks are associated and how best to mitigate them. An approach is taken that highlights these problems, but also keeps in mind that mitigation may be too restrictive on the farming system and make farming impractical.

The Welfare of Animals in Animal-Assisted Interventions: Foundations and Best Practice Methods

The Welfare of Animals in Animal-Assisted Interventions pdf

The Welfare of Animals in Animal-Assisted Interventions: Foundations and Best Practice Methods

The Welfare Of Animals In Animal-Assisted Interventions Pdf

By Jose M. Peralta and Aubrey H. Fine

The Welfare of Animals in Animal-Assisted Interventions: Foundations and Best Practice Methods PDF is focusing on the animal’s perspective and best practices to ensure the welfare of both therapy animals and their human counterparts in animal-assisted interventions. Written by leading scientists, it summarizes the scientific evidence available concerning the impacts on animals in these settings, including companion species, horses, marine mammals and other animals used in therapy.

There has been a dramatic increase in the range of animal-assisted interventions used in medical and allied health environments in recent years, and the field is now entering an era with a greater interest in defining the underlying mechanisms of the human-animal bond as well as the therapeutic benefits of these interactions. Animal-assisted interventions, as with other uses of animals by humans, impose a unique set of stresses on the animals, which the community has only recently begun to acknowledge. For the field to continue to flourish, more evidence is needed to shed light on the implications for the animals and what guidelines need to be put into practice to ensure welfare.

With the ultimate goal of improving the impact that we have on the animals under our care, the book provides a roadmap for researchers and clinicians as they attempt to safely and humanely incorporate various species of animals into therapeutic settings. The authors also offer instructions and suggestions for areas that need to be studied more robustly over the next decade to continue to ensure the safe and proper use of animals in therapy sessions.

This is an informative, thought-provoking and instructive resource for practitioners and researchers in the field of medicine and clinical psychology using animal-assisted interventions, as well as for veterinarians and welfare scientists.

  • Specifically addresses the impact of interventions on the part of the animal
  • Discusses the human-animal bond and retirement of therapy animals
  • Provides suggestions on critical aspects of animal-assisted interventions
  • Suggests future research avenues in therapy-animal welfare
  • Is the only guide to ensuring welfare and safety for both humans and therapy animals
