Masitinib Mesylate In Dogs & Cats: Uses, Dosage and Side Effects

Overview

• In vitro selective and potent protein tyrosine kinase inhibitor with maximal affinity for mutated forms of the c-KIT tyrosine kinase receptor.
• Inhibitors of tyrosine kinase impede the TK receptor pathways required for cell replication.

Uses of Masitinib mesylate

• Treatment of dogs diagnosed with non-resectable mast cell tumours, specifically those classified as Patnaik grade 2 or 3, and preferably with a confirmed mutation in the c-KIT tyrosine kinase receptor.
• Management of atopic dermatitis, inflammatory bowel disease, osteosarcoma, anal sac adenocarcinoma, and haemangiosarcoma in dogs.
• Previous research has examined the utilisation of masitinib in felines afflicted with injection-site sarcoma and asthma.

Dose of Masitinib mesylate in Dogs and Cats

Dogs:

• All uses: 11–14 mg/kg p.o. q24h (usually 12.5 mg/kg p.o. q24h).

Cats:

• Limited evidence: 50 mg per cat p.o. q24–48h has been administered to healthy cats.

Side Effects of Masitinib mesylate in Dogs and Cats

• Mild to moderate gastrointestinal effects, such as diarrhoea and vomiting.
• Changes in the hair coat and hair loss.
• Renal toxicity, anaemia, protein loss, myelosuppression, elevated hepatic enzyme activity, lethargy, cough, and lymphadenomegaly.

Contraindications of Masitinib mesylate in Dogs and Cats

• Pregnant or lactating female dogs.
• Dogs younger than 24 months.
• Dogs weighing less than 7 kg.
• Dogs with pre-existing symptoms of myelosuppression.
• Dogs that have previously exhibited hypersensitivity to masitinib.

Some Notes:

• Concurrent use of drugs that are highly protein-bound or interact with the cytochrome P450 enzyme pathway may increase the risk of adverse side effects.
