Overview

  • Prodrug of the nucleotide analogue PMEG; causes cytotoxicity in dividing cells due to inhibition of DNA polymerases.

Uses of Rabacfosadine

  • Rabacfosadine has been trialled in canine lymphoma (B and T cell) and multiple myeloma.

Dose of Rabacfosadine in Dogs and Cats

Dogs:

  • 0.82–1 mg/kg i.v. over 30 min once every 21 days.
  • Has been used in combination with doxorubicin at weeks 0, 6, 12 as part of an alternating protocol.

Cats:

  • Unknown.

You Should Give:

Side Effects of Rabacfosadine in Dogs and Cats

  • May cause myelosuppression and gastrointestinal adverse events (including haemorrhagic gastroenteritis).
  • Liver enzyme activity elevation, azotaemia, fever, weight loss, lethargy, dermatological signs, pulmonary fibrosis, injected sclera and urinary signs/proteinuria/glycosuria are also reported.

Contraindications of Rabacfosadine in Dogs and Cats

  • Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity.
  • Do not use in patients with pre-existing bone marrow suppression or liver dysfunction.
  • Do not use in patients with known pulmonary disease or those susceptible to pulmonary fibrosis.
