Bisacodyl: Uses, Dosage and Side Effects
Overview
- Mild stimulant laxative that increases intestinal motility, but inhibits absorption of water. It is locally active with <5% systemic absorption.
Uses of Bisacodyl
- Constipation.
- Onset of action 6–10 hours (oral use), or 15–60 minutes (rectal use).
Dose of Bisacodyl in Dogs and Cats
Dogs:
Constipation: 5–15 mg/dog prn.
Cats:
Constipation: 2–5 mg/cat prn.

Contraindications of Bisacodyl in Dogs and Cats
- Must not be used in patients with ileus, intestinal obstruction or dehydration.
