Quantifying Pain In Laying Hens: A Blueprint For The Comparative Analysis Of Welfare In Animals Pdf Download

By Cynthia Schuck-Paim and Wladimir J. Alonso

Quantifying Pain in Laying Hens: A Blueprint for the Comparative Analysis of Welfare in Animals. To effectively improve the lives of the animals under human care, a clear understanding of the impact of living conditions and practices on animal welfare is essential to establish which policies and interventions should be ascribed priority. This new book is an effort in this direction. It presents an analytical framework designed for the description and quantification of the negative affective experiences of animals, which are operationally referred to as ‘pain’ (physical and psychological). The book is the first road-test of the method, applying it to conditions that impact negatively the welfare of egg laying hens.

Topics include the impact of keel bone fractures, injurious pecking, deprivation of motivated behaviors, reproductive diseases, and the cumulative pain endured in different housing systems. It is our hope that the findings emerging from this endeavor contribute towards a more comprehensive understanding of the impact of decisions on the lives of animals, and a platform for debate and collaboration.

Notions of Reproductive Techniques in Snakes

Notions of Reproductive Techniques in Snakes

Notions Of Reproductive Techniques In Snakes Pdf Download

By Diego Cattarossi

Notions of Reproductive Techniques in Snakes. Snakes indisputably fascinate and at the same time frighten man. Nobody can remain indifferent in front of creatures so distant morphologically from us but so present in our tradition and in the collective imagination. Snakes have always been captured for detention or public display, but we knew little about their procreation and the possibility of obtaining a “domestic” population. The captive reproduction of these reptiles has so far been the prerogative of very few passionate herpetologists who, with commitment and great efforts, have been the first to experiment with the most effective techniques to give birth to their young in an environment controlled by humans. In this book we try to make this knowledge common heritage, explaining how to manage a breeding animal, how to create pairs, how to feed them in order to obtain effective reproduction. There is no lack of veterinary insights into the most common diseases and the use of ultrasound for gynecological and obstetric purposes. The book is enriched with many photos and images.

Electroporation in Veterinary Oncology Practice: Electrochemotherapy and Gene Electrotransfer for Immunotherapy

Electroporation in Veterinary Oncology Practice: Electrochemotherapy and Gene Electrotransfer for Immunotherapy

Electroporation In Veterinary Oncology Practice: Electrochemotherapy And Gene Electrotransfer For Immunotherapy Pdf Download

By Joseph A. Impellizeri

Electroporation in Veterinary Oncology Practice: Electrochemotherapy and Gene Electrotransfer for Immunotherapy is Written by an international team of experts, this book presents worldwide emerging therapy options for cancer treatments in veterinary oncology practice.

Electroporation offers a precision tool to target cancer cells without destroying surrounding tissue structures. The opening of tumor cell membranes facilitates local control of solid tumors either through the delivery of chemotherapeutics or by direct ablation of tissues using electric fields. In addition, transfer of gene-based products into the cancer cells can be used for genetic vaccination to achieve systemic responses and cancer control.

Readers will discover valuable reference texts for practitioner education, including chapters on electrodes for unique anatomical access and treatment planning for deep-seated tumors, different immunotherapy applications with gene electrotransfer, calcium electroporation, irreversible electroporation applications and combinations with other common treatments such as surgery, radiation therapy and chemotherapy.

Therapy options with electroporation are gaining interest around the world in both human and veterinary oncology, making Electroporation in Veterinary Oncology Practice: Electrochemotherapy and Gene Electrotransfer for Immunotherapy book valuable for oncologists, surgeons, primary care veterinarians, residents, interns and students at veterinary schools, where teaching of Electrochemotherapy will become part of the curriculum.
