Vaccines have historically been considered to be the most cost-effective method for preventing communicable diseases. It was a vaccine that enabled global eradication of the dreaded disease smallpox. Mass immunization of children forms the anchor of the strategy of the World Health Organization (WHO) to attain “health for all” status by the year 2000. Vaccinology is undergoing a dimensional change with the advances that have taken place in immunology and genetic engineering. Vaccines that confer short or inadequate immunity or that have side effects are being replaced by better vaccines. New vaccines are being developed for a variety of maladies. Monoclonal antibodies and T cell clones have been employed to delineate the immunodeterminants on microbes, an approach elegantly complemented by computer graphics and molecular imaging techniques. Possibilities have opened for obtaining hitherto scarce antigens of parasites by the DNA recombinant route. Better appreciation of the idiotypic network has aroused research on anti idiotypic vaccines. Solid-phase synthesis of peptides is leading to an array of synthetic vaccines, an approach that is expected to attain its full potential once the sequences activating suppressor cells are discovered and the rules for presentation of antigens to T and B cells are better worked out. A new breed of vaccines is on the horizon that seeks to control fertility. Originally conceived to intercept a step in the reproductive process, they are conceptual models for developing approaches to regulate the body’s internal processes.

Proper Maintenance of Instruments in Veterinary Surgeries PDF Book. Due to many enquiries from veterinary surgeons regarding the preparation of instruments, the Instrument Preparation Working Group (AKI) decided to become involved in this sector too. A green brochure has been developed in cooperation with veterinary surgeons and the relevant industry alongside the red brochure for human medicine instruments and the yellow brochure for the dental sector. During the revision of the brochure regarding its content it became clear that the recommendations from the human sector could be adapted. Beyond that, the green brochure also contains references for specific instruments, like e.g. clippers.

The intention is to provide users with a guide containing detailed instructions for the correct handling of instruments. The instruments’ value thereby being optimised.

These instructions are intended as a supplement to the recommendations published by the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) and the German Society for Hygiene and Microbiology, as well as relevant accident prevention regulations and the instructions of the manufacturer.

Proper instrument disinfection and sterilization clearly depends on adequate cleaning and care, as well as on selecting the right materials and using suitable cleaning agents and treatment processes in order to maintain the value of the instruments.

Therefore, we have every reason to thank the Instrument Preparation Working Group for publishing this brochure for the veterinary medicine. We can only hope that the AKI gives this topic due consideration in the future too.

The human–animal bond has evolved and diversi?ed down the ages. Dogs, cats and even horses, have long ful?lled the role of faithful companion and indeed, as exempli?ed by the introduction of seeing and hearing dogs, there may be a critical level of co-dependency between the species. In the twenty-?rst century, the animal types that are kept as pets in many parts of the world are extensive ranging from reptiles through rodents to ruminants and beyond. As would be predicted by the nature of the relationship, the approach to treatment of a companion animal is often closely aligned to that which would have been offered to their owner. However, an increasing awareness of welfare issues, such as the recognition that animals expe- ence pain and the proven bene?ts of disease prevention in intensive farming units, together with the growth in zoos and wildlife parks, has increased the likelihood of food producing and non-domesticated animals receiving medicinal products during their life-time. Although many of the individual drugs or classes of drugs administered to animals are the same as, or derived from, those given to man, the safe and effective use of drugs in animals often cannot be achieved by simply transposing knowledge of drug action on, or behaviour in, the body from one species to another. The impact of the anatomical, physiological and pathophysiological variability that spans the animal kingdom can often profoundly alter drug response.
