The Avian Migrant: The Biology of Bird Migration

The Avian Migrant: The Biology of Bird Migration PDF

The Avian Migrant: The Biology of Bird Migration

The Avian Migrant: The Biology Of Bird Migration Pdf

By John Rappole

The Avian Migrant: The Biology of Bird Migration PDF. The purpose of migration, regardless of the distance involved, is to exploit two or more environments suitable for survival or reproduction over time, usually on a seasonal basis. Yet individual organisms can practice the phenomenon differently, and birds deploy unique patterns of movement over particular segments of time. Incorporating the latest research on bird migration, this concise, critical assessment offers contemporary readers a firm grasp of what defines an avian migrant, how the organism came to be, what is known about its behavior, and how we can resolve its enduring mysteries.

John H. Rappole’s sophisticated survey of field data clarifies key ecological, biological, physiological, navigational, and evolutionary concerns. He begins with the very first migrants, who traded a home environment of greater stability for one of greater seasonality, and uses the structure of the annual cycle to examine the difference between migratory birds and their resident counterparts. He ultimately connects these differences to evolutionary milestones that have shaped a migrant lifestyle through natural selection. Rather than catalogue and describe various aspects of bird migration, Rappole considers how the avian migrant fits within a larger ecological frame, enabling a richer understanding of the phenomenon and its critical role in sustaining a hospitable and productive environment. Rappole concludes with a focus on population biology and conservation across time periods, considering the link between bird migration and the spread of disease among birds and humans, and the effects of global warming on migrant breeding ranges, reaction norms, and macroecology.

Current Trends in the Study of Bacterial and Viral Fish and Shrimp Diseases

Current Trends In The Study Of Bacterial And Viral Fish And Shrimp Diseases Pdf

By Ka Yin Leung

Current Trends in the Study of Bacterial and Viral Fish and Shrimp Diseases PDF. The important volume summarizes the current trends and developments in the study of bacterial and viral fish diseases. Books on these subjects are few and relevant review articles are mostly outdated. This volume will thus serve as a platform for scientists and aquaculturists to understand the current limitations as well as new developments so that fish health and disease control can advance to new heights. The first section provides readers with an overview of the bacterial and viral diseases and the current understanding of innate immunity and interactions with pathogens. Section II includes case studies, where three pathogens are presented, namely two bacteria (Aeromonas hydrophila and Vibrio anguillarum, the common causes of bacterial diseases in freshwater and marine aquaculture, respectively) and the white spot syndrome virus (an important viral disease in shrimp). These case studies serve as models for the study of various bacterial and viral diseases. Section III presents new platform technologies that are widely used in the study of human pathogens. It aims to spur fish biologists to use modern and cutting edge technologies for their studies so that the study of fish disease can move into the mainstream and focus on the basics. The final section is on marine biotechnology, discussing biotechnology products that are urgently needed for the aquaculture industry — spin-offs from basic research, including diagnostics, immunotherapy and vaccine development, and the use of probiotics.

The Welfare of Cattle

The Welfare of Cattle pdf

The Welfare of Cattle

The Welfare Of Cattle Pdf

By Terry Engle, Donald J. Klingborg and Bernard E. Rollin

The Welfare of Cattle PDF offers an accurate, detailed account of the ethical and welfare concerns related to the human use of cattle. There is currently no significant book dealing with the welfare of cows, animals often seen as archetypal paradigms of ‘farm animals’. Covering both beef and dairy cattle, the expert authors provide in-depth information on the husbandry roots of traditional agriculture, the replacement of this system of stewardship by an industrial model, and the resulting welfare challenges associated with industrial agriculture: feedlots, highly industrialized dairies, and slaughterhouses killing huge numbers of animals who have been transported great distances. This important book explores in detail the ways in which people who are providing care for cattle can take their first step, or their next step, toward enhancing the welfare of these animals.

  • Contains a selection of White Papers, commissioned to better inform the exploration of cattle welfare. These are prepared by notable experts in their field, to help provide factual context around selected topics that impact cattle welfare and production systems.
  • Covers all aspects of cattle use in an accessible style, making this a must have volume for anyone interested in cattle welfare or cattle medicine.
  • Provides an in-depth picture of the distinctive beef and dairy cattle welfare practices and issues, covering topics such as behavior, breeding and genetic manipulation, nutrition and feeding, housing and management, health and disease, and transport and slaughter.
  • Written by acknowledged leaders in animal science, veterinary science, philosophy and animal welfare, presenting a truly multidisciplinary perspective on cattle welfare.
  • Includes a section on understanding and managing animal welfare in both beef and dairy cattle, discussing how cattle perceive the world, animal handling and pain mitigation, and how to assure that the cows have a reasonably good life.
