Tilapia: Biology, Management Practices and Human Consumption

Tilapia Biology Management Practices And Human Consumption

By Renae Wakefield

Tilapia: Biology, Management Practices and Human Consumption PDF. Aquaculture is one of the fastest growing sectors of agriculture globally. Production in freshwater and marine fisheries has plateaued or is declining, and the increasing demand for seafood and need for affordable protein sources in third world countries will ensure growth of aquaculture in the future. Tilapia are the second most cultured fish worldwide behind the carps, and even though they are easily cultured in a wide variety of environments and are relatively resistant to aquaculture stressors compared to other cultured finfish species, significant losses to disease still occur under intensive culture. This book discusses the biology, management practices and human consumption of tilapia.

Chapter 1. Potential for Probiotic, Prebiotic, and Synbiotic Use in Tilapia Culture

Chapter 2. Tilapia Production: From Water to Human Consumption

Toxocara: The Enigmatic Parasite

Toxocara: The Enigmatic Parasite

Toxocara The Enigmatic Parasite

By C. V. Holland and H. V. Smith

Toxocara is a parasitic helminth worm which continues to stimulate both public concern and scientific interest. Toxocara canis and T.cati, the most studied species, are gastrointestinal parasites of dogs and cats and their eggs can contaminate the environment, thus exposing humans and other mammals and birds to infection. Many questions remain unanswered about the host-parasite relationship, its epidemiology and public health significance. Veterinarians and clinicians are interested in its importance as a zoonosis. The parasite’s capacity to cause ocular disease is of concern to ophthalmologists, while its propensity to stimulate allergic manifestations is of interest to allergologists, dermatologists and respiratory medicine specialists. Furthermore Toxocara provides a unique model system to explore questions in parasite biology. This book provides a comprehensive review of Toxocara and the disease it causes known as toxocariasis.

Vaccines for Veterinarians

Vaccines for Veterinarians

Vaccines For Veterinarians

By Ian Tizard

Both a theoretical text and a practical handbook, Vaccines for Veterinarians is the first of its kind to bring the basic science of animal vaccination and the practical details of vaccine use together in one single volume. From the first chapter on the history of vaccination and the triumph of rinderpest eradication to the last chapter on the rapidly emerging field of cancer vaccines, this book offers a truly comprehensive grounding in established and emerging vaccines for both major and minor species. Specific topics include viral vectored vaccines, DNA-plasmid vaccines, RNA vaccines, reverse vaccinology, the complexities of adjuvant use, vaccine failures and adverse events, vaccine production and regulation, robotic vaccination machines, contraceptive and production-enhancing vaccines, and so much more. At a time when resistance to human vaccination is receiving much publicity, this evidence-based book is the ideal counter to ill-informed speculation — serving as a timely reminder that vaccination is essential for the control of infectious diseases in animals.

  • Well-respected and experienced veterinary author, Ian Tizard, provides expert guidance on the topic of vaccinations and immunology in veterinary medicine.
  • Expert Consult site offers an online version of the book, making it easy to search the entire book electronically.

Necropsy: Procedures and Basic Diagnostic Methods for Practicing Veterinarians

Necropsy: Procedures and Basic Diagnostic Methods for Practicing Veterinarians

Necropsy: Procedures And Basic Diagnostic Methods For Practicing Veterinarians Pdf

By Albert C. Strafuss

Necropsy: Procedures and Basic Diagnostic Methods for Practicing Veterinarians PDF is written to aid veterinary practitioners and students in establishing diagnoses. Information scattered throughout the literature or lear!led by the author’s experience has been collated and presented in a logical sequence. A necropsy procedure for the dog with appropriate modifications for other domestic animals is described, thereby eliminating the necessity of learning a different procedure for each species. Emphasis is placed on gross pathologic diagnoses with simple and quick supportive laboratory techniques, which can be performed during necropsy (impressions or smears, Gram stains, etc.). A common mistake in practice is to omit laboratory procedures or to do difficult tests that are needed infrequently without first perfecting tests that are supportive, simply done, inexpensive, and more rewarding.
