Overview
- Essential cofactor for enzymes involved in DNA and RNA synthesis and in carbohydrate metabolism.
Uses of Vitamin B12 (Cyanocobalamin,
Hydroxocobalamin)
- Used to treat vitamin B12 deficiency.
- Such a deficiency may develop in patients with significant, malabsorptive disease of the
distal ileum and exocrine pancreatic insufficiency.
Dose of Vitamin B12 (Cyanocobalamin,
Hydroxocobalamin) in Dogs and Cats
Dogs:
Injectable:
- 0.02 mg/kg s.c., i.m. q7d for 4–6 weeks until the serum concentration normalizes.
- Then as required to maintain normal serum levels.
Oral:
- <10 kg: ½ capsule per day or 1 capsule every other day.
- 10–20 kg: 1 capsule per day
- >20 kg: 2 capsules per day.
- The number of capsules can be increased or decreased as needed to maintain normal cobalamin.

- Hypersensitivity to the phenol preservative in the injectable solutions can occur; patients should be monitored after injections for rash, fever and urticaria.

- Do not give i.v.
