• Mupirocin possesses a distinctive chemical composition that is not associated with any previously identified category of antibiotics.
• The process of protein synthesis in bacteria is impeded through the inhibition of bacterial isoleucyl-tRNA synthetase.

Uses of Mupirocin (Pseudomonic acid A)

• This treatment is typically recommended for managing resistant infections.
• Use only when no other treatments are available and for no more than 7 days to prevent resistance.
• Managing Staphylococcus-related bacterial skin infections.
• Uses for mupirocin include:

1. Canine pyotraumatic (acute moist) dermatitis.
2. Intertrigo (fold pyoderma).
3. Callus pyoderma and canine.
4. Feline acne.

• Mupirocin inhibits the growth of several pathogenic fungi, including: a range of dermatophytes and Pityrosporum; topical application may be useful in controlling such infections, although data are currently lacking as to its efficacy in vivo.

Dose of Mupirocin (Pseudomonic acid A) in Dogs and Cats

Dogs, Cats:

• Apply a thin layer of cream to infected areas q8h.
• 10 minutes of contact time is required for the activity.

• Application in humans has been associated with a stinging sensation.

Contraindications of Mupirocin (Pseudomonic acid A) in Dogs and Cats

• Avoid if renal impairment is present.

Some Notes:

• Due to its unique method of action, mupirocin is not cross-resistant to other antibacterial agents and effectively targets multiresistant bacteria strains.
• This agent is not recommended for routine use in human medicine as it is reserved for eradicating MRSA in the nasal cavity and low-level resistance to mupirocin is emerging.
