Overview

• Trientine is a copper chelator used in the management of copper toxicosis and acts primarily to increase the urinary elimination of copper.

Uses of Trientine (2,2,2-Tetramine)

• Treatment of dogs with copper hepatotoxicosis, especially those intolerant of penicillamine.
• Compared with penicillamine, it has a greater affinity for plasma copper but a reduced affinity for tissue copper.

Dose of Trientine (2,2,2-Tetramine) in Dogs and Cats

Dogs:

• 10–15 mg/kg p.o. q12h.
• Vomiting may be reduced by giving in divided doses with food.
