Overview

Uses of Selegiline (l-Deprenyl)

  • Authorized for treating behavioural disorders of purely emotional origin, including depression and anxiety.
  • Used in association with behavior therapy for emotional signs in conditions like overactivity, separation problems, generalized phobia, and unsociable behavior.
  • Characterized by modifications in feeding, drinking, autostimulatory behavior, sleep, exploratory behavior, aggression linked to fear and/or irritation, social behavior, and somatic disorders (e.g., tachycardia, emotional micturition).
  • May enhance learning in specific contexts and is indicated for treating canine cognitive dysfunction, especially when anxiety and/or social withdrawal signs are present.
  • Also used for treating signs of cognitive decline in older cats.
  • Treatment can be stopped suddenly without gradual dose reduction.

Dogs:

  • 0.5–1 mg/kg p.o. q24h for a minimum of 2 months.

Cats:

  • 1 mg/kg p.o. q24h.

Contraindications of Selegiline (l-Deprenyl) in Dogs and Cats

  • Selegiline should not be used in animals with a known sensitivity to the drug or administered to lactating or pregnant bitches as it may act on prolactin secretion.

Some Notes:

  • Do not administer Selegiline with alpha-2 antagonists (or within 24 hours before or after their use), pethidine, ephedrine, potential monoamine oxidase inhibitors (e.g., amitraz), or phenothiazines.
  • The effect of morphine is potentiated when used simultaneously with Selegiline.
  • Potential interactions may exist with metronidazole, prednisolone, and trimethoprim.
  • Avoid using Selegiline for at least 2–3 weeks after the use of tricyclic antidepressants (e.g., amitriptyline, doxepin, clomipramine), or 6 weeks after the long-term use of fluoxetine.
