Propentofylline In Dogs & Cats: Uses, Dosage and Side Effects

Overview

• Propentofylline, a xanthine derivative, enhances blood circulation in the heart, muscles, and central nervous system by inhibiting phosphodiesterase.
• It exhibits antiarrhythmic properties and acts as a bronchodilator.
• Additionally, it exerts positive inotropic and chronotropic effects on the heart.
• Propentofylline inhibits platelet aggregation and reduces peripheral vascular resistance.

Uses of Propentofylline

• Improvement of demeanour in animals.
• Treatment of age-related behaviour problems, particularly in combination with selegiline and dietary management for canine cognitive dysfunction.
• Use with care in patients with cardiac disease

Dose of Propentofylline in Dogs and Cats

Dogs:

• 2.5–5 mg/kg p.o. q12h.
• Administer 30 min before food.

Cats:

• Cognitive dysfunction: 12.5 mg/cat p.o. q24h.

Side Effects of Propentofylline in Dogs and Cats

• May increase myocardial oxygen demand

Contraindications of Propentofylline in Dogs and Cats

• Do not administer to pregnant bitches or breeding animals, as it has not yet been evaluated in this class of animal.
