Dose of Lorazepam in Dogs and Cats

Dogs, Cats:

• 0.02–0.1 mg/kg p.o. q12–24h.
• Start at a lower dose and gradually increase.

Side Effects of Lorazepam in Dogs and Cats

• One commonly expressed apprehension regarding benzodiazepines pertains to disinhibition and the following manifestation of aggressive behaviour.
• The individual may experience drowsiness and a temporary, mild lack of coordination.

Contraindications of Lorazepam in Dogs and Cats

• Glaucoma
• Substantial hepatic or renal impairment, and heightened sensitivity to benzodiazepines.
• It is not advisable to provide this substance to pregnant or breastfeeding animals.

Some Notes:

• Caution is advised if used with antifungals such as itraconazole, which inhibit its metabolism.
• In the context of an extended behavioural therapy programme, it may be imperative to implement strategies that prevent relapses resulting from exposure to highly fear-inducing stimuli during treatment.
• Nevertheless, due to the potential memory-inhibiting effects of benzodiazepines, it is not advisable to incorporate them into a behaviour plan as a standard practice, unless under meticulous supervision.
• The discontinuation of medication should be executed gradually, as an abrupt cessation may lead to symptoms such as tremor and loss of appetite.
