Ofloxacin In Dogs & Cats: Uses, Dosage and Side Effects

Overview

  • Concentration-dependent antimicrobial which works by inhibiting the bacterial DNA gyrase enzyme, causing damage to the bacterial DNA.

Uses of Ofloxacin

  • Fluoroquinolone usage should be reserved for cases where culture and sensitivity testing indicate a likely clinical response and when conventional first- and second-line antimicrobial treatments would not be effective.
  • It is particularly useful for ophthalmic applications when other antibacterial drugs prove ineffective.
  • Fluoroquinolones demonstrate activity against various ocular pathogens, including Staphylococcus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, although some staphylococcal and streptococcal organisms are becoming increasingly resistant.
