Ticarcillin In Dogs & Cats: Uses, Dosage and Side Effects
Overview
- Time-dependent, beta-lactam antibiotic.
- Binds to penicillin-binding proteins, disrupting cell wall synthesis.
- Reduces bacterial cell wall strength and rigidity, affecting cell division, growth, and septum formation.
- Clavulanic acid serves as a non-competitive ‘suicide’ inhibitor for beta-lactamase enzymes.
Uses of Ticarcillin
- Carboxypenicillin is indicated for treating serious infections caused by Pseudomonas aeruginosa and other Gram-negative bacteria like Proteus spp. and Bacteroides fragilis.
- Often used with an aminoglycoside (e.g., gentamicin) for Pseudomonas septicaemias due to synergistic effect.
- Kills bacteria via a time-dependent mechanism, requiring dosing regimens to maintain tissue concentration above the MIC throughout the interdosing interval.
- Limited pharmacokinetic data is available for the ticarcillin/clavulanic acid combination in veterinary species.
- Stability after reconstitution varies depending on the diluent used.
Dose of Ticarcillin in Dogs and Cats
Dogs, Cats:
- For serious systemic infections: 15–25 mg/kg i.v., followed by CRI at 7.5–15 mg/kg/h; topical to the ear as an adjunct to Pseudomonas otitis, instil 0.25–0.5 ml of a 100 mg/ml injectable ticarcillin solution into the affected ear q8h.
