Lufenuron In Dogs & Cats: Uses, Dosage and Side Effects

Overview

• The inhibition of chitin synthetase results in impeding the successful hatching of flea eggs.

Uses of Lufenuron

• For the prevention of flea infestation caused by Ctenocephalides felis and C. canis.
• The antifungal action of Lufenuron is known to exist, but, the particular doses required for the efficient treatment of dermatophytosis have not yet been determined.

Dose of Lufenuron in Dogs and Cats

Dogs:

• Fleas: 10 mg/kg p.o., s.c. q 1 month (equivalent to a dose of 0.5 mg/kg milbemycin in combined preparations).

Cats:

• Fleas: 10 mg/kg s.c. q 6 months or 30 mg/kg p.o. q1month.

Side Effects of Lufenuron in Dogs and Cats

• Infrequently, canines have exhibited symptoms of nervousness, pruritus, emesis, or diarrhoea subsequent to the administration of Programme pills.
• Occasionally, feline injection may result in the manifestation of lethargy.

Contraindications of Lufenuron in Dogs and Cats

• Administration of unweaned kittens is not recommended.

Some Notes:

• It is recommended to use an authorised adulticide in addition to other treatments for the management of flea infestations.
• It is imperative to provide treatment for all animals residing within a family.
• It is recommended to administer tablets or suspensions in conjunction with a meal.
• The administration of Programme and Programme Plus is feasible throughout pregnancy and breastfeeding.
• The administration of Programme Plus is suitable for puppies that are at least 2 weeks old or weigh more than 1 kilogramme.
• Additionally, the Programme can be delivered to weaned puppies.
