Uses of Oxybutynin hydrochloride

  • May be useful for the treatment of detrusor hyperreflexia/ overactive bladder in cats and dogs.

Dose of Oxybutynin hydrochloride in Dogs and Cats

Dogs:

  • Detrusor hyperreflexia (refractory incontinence): 0.2 mg/kg p.o. q8–12h.

Cats:

  • Detrusor hyperreflexia: 0.5–1.25 mg per cat p.o. q8–12h.

Side Effects of Oxybutynin hydrochloride in Dogs and Cats

  • Small animals have experienced side effects like diarrhea, constipation, urinary retention, and sedation when using this medication.
  • In humans, reported adverse effects include dryness of the mouth and eyes, skin reactions, rapid heart rate, vomiting, palpitations, and confusion.

Contraindications of Oxybutynin hydrochloride in Dogs and Cats

  • Limited animal data but in humans contraindications include obstructive GI disease/ileus, gastro-oesophageal reflux/hiatal hernia, glaucoma, cardiac disease,
    myasthenia gravis and obstructive urinary disease.

Some Notes:

  • Use with caution in patients receiving other anticholinergic agents, azole antifungals, CNS depressants and macrolide antibiotics.
