Overview

  • Enhances renal tubular resorption of calcium, and alkalinizes urine.

Uses of Potassium citrate

  • Management of calcium oxalate and urate urolithiasis, and fungal urinary tract infections.
  • May be used to treat hypokalaemia, although potassium chloride or gluconate is preferred.
  • Used to treat some forms of metabolic acidosis.

Dose of Potassium citrate in Dogs and Cats

Dogs, Cats:

  • Urinary alkalinization: 75 mg/kg or 2 mmol/kg p.o. q12h.
