Animal Ethics in the Wild: Wild Animal Suffering and Intervention in Nature

Animal Ethics In The Wild: Wild Animal Suffering And Intervention In Nature Pdf Download

By Catia Faria

Animal Ethics in the Wild: Wild Animal Suffering and Intervention in Nature. Animals, like humans, suffer and die from natural causes. This is particularly true of animals living in the wild, given their high exposure to, and low capacity to cope with, harmful natural processes. Most wild animals likely have short lives, full of suffering, usually ending in terrible deaths. This book argues that on the assumption that we have reasons to assist others in need, we should intervene in nature to prevent or reduce the harms wild animals suffer, provided that it is feasible and that the expected result is positive overall. It is of the utmost importance that academics from different disciplines as well as animal advocates begin to confront this issue. The more people are concerned with wild animal suffering, the more probable it is that safe and effective solutions to the plight of wild animals will be implemented in the future.

Farmed Animals On Film: A Manifesto For A New Ethic Pdf Download

By Stephen Marcus Finn

Farmed Animals on Film: A Manifesto for a New Ethic book aims to show how film can increase awareness of the plight of farmed animals without exploiting them. Much has been written on the rights of animals, be they in the wild or circuses, hunted, experimented on, used for entertainment, or slaughtered and consumed. However, there has been little that has examined in any detail the filming of farmed animals, and nothing on a declaration of rights for such animals, thus leaving them in a limbo of neglect. Stephen Marcus Finn offers a manifesto on how to foster the rights of farmed animals in filming and sets out to rectify this lacuna.

  • Explores how to foster the rights of farmed animals on film
  • Includes chapters by academics and animal advocates
  • Follows a cross-disciplinary approach drawing on several traditions

Basic Monitoring in Canine and Feline Emergency Patients

Basic Monitoring In Canine And Feline Emergency Patients Pdf Download

By Elizabeth J. Thomovsky, Paula A. Johnson and Aimee C. Brooks

Basic Monitoring in Canine and Feline Emergency Patients discusses basic monitoring techniques that can be easily performed on emergency canine and feline patients in both first line emergency and primary care clinics. Techniques include blood pressure measurement, capnography, electrocardiography, pulse oximetry, and point of care monitoring ranging from the physical exam to bedside ultrasound and diagnostic tests such as PCV/TP, blood glucose and lactate.

Each chapter begins with basic physiology as related to the monitoring technique, before reviewing how the piece of equipment used for monitoring works, pros and cons of the equipment, and limitations of the device. A simple, consistent layout for each chapter makes it easy to quickly locate information within the book. A final section in each chapter gives practical examples of how to use the monitoring technique in a clinical setting. The book also:

  • Emphasizes how physiology ties into what information each technique does
  • Includes pictures, tables, and diagrams to help explain concepts;
  • Delivers guidelines for rational interpretation of the results acquired.

An important resource for both veterinary practitioners and students, this book provides a succinct approach to understanding the monitoring equipment used in emergency patients.
