Human-Canine Collaboration in Care: Doing Diabetes

Human-Canine Collaboration in Care: Doing Diabetes PDF

Human-Canine Collaboration in Care: Doing Diabetes

Human-Canine Collaboration In Care: Doing Diabetes Pdf

By Fenella Eason

Human-Canine Collaboration in Care: Doing Diabetes PDF. Adopting an anthrozoological perspective to study the participation of non-human animals in regimes of care, this book examines the use of canine scent detection to alert ‘hypo-unaware’ individuals to symptoms of human chronic illness. Based on ethnographic research and interviews, it focuses on the manner in which trained assistance dogs are able to use their sense of smell to alert human companions with Type 1 diabetes to imminent hypoglycaemic episodes, thus reducing the risk of collapse into unconsciousness, coma or, at worst, death. Through analyses of participant narrations of the everyday complexities of ‘doing’ diabetes with the assistance of medical alert dogs, the author sheds light on the way in which each human-canine dyad becomes acknowledged as a team of ‘one’ in society. Based on the concept of dogs as friends and work colleagues, as animate instruments and biomedical resources, the book raises conceptual questions surrounding the acceptable use of animals and their role within society. As such, this volume will appeal to scholars across the social sciences with interests in human-animal interactions and intersections. It may also appeal to healthcare practitioners and individuals interested in innovative multispecies methods of managing chronic illness.

Avian Influenza virus

Avian Influenza Virus Pdf

By Erica Spackman

Avian Influenza virus PDF. With the growing global fear of a major pandemic, avian influenza virus research has increased greatly in importance during this young century. In Avian Influenza Virus, an expert team of researchers and diagnosticians examine the fundamental yet essential virological methods for AI virus research and diagnostics as well as some of the newest molecular procedures currently used for basic and applied research.  Exciting, cutting-edge new methods focus on studying the virus itself and work with avian hosts, an area greatly lacking in research.  Following the format of the highly successful Methods in Molecular Biology™ series, each chapter provides readily reproducible laboratory protocols offering step-by-step instruction and lists of the necessary equipment for the task.

Comprehensive and timely, Avian Influenza Virus equips diagnosticians and researchers with the current tools and information they need to learn more about this high impact disease.

Avian Influenza Etiology Pathogenesis and Interventions

Avian Influenza Etiology Pathogenesis and Interventions pdf

Avian Influenza Etiology Pathogenesis and Interventions

Avian Influenza Etiology Pathogenesis And Interventions Pdf

By Salomon Haugan and Walter Bjornson

Avian Influenza Etiology Pathogenesis and Interventions PDF. Avian influenza, sometimes avian flu, and commonly called bird flu, refers to “influenza caused by viruses adapted to birds.” Of greatest concern is highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI). These influenza viruses occur naturally among birds. Wild birds worldwide carry the viruses in their intestines, but usually do not get sick from them. However, avian influenza is very contagious among birds and can make some domesticated birds, including chickens, ducks, and turkeys, very ill. Infected birds shed influenza virus in their saliva, nasal secretions, and feces. Susceptible birds become infected when they have contact with contaminated secretions or excretions or with surfaces that are contaminated with secretions or excretions from infected birds. The risk from avian influenza is generally low for most people, because the viruses do not usually infect humans. However, confirmed cases of human infection from several subtypes of avian influenza infection have been reported since 1997. The spread of avian influenza viruses from one ill person to another has been reported very rarely, and has been limited, inefficient and unsustained. This important book gathers the latest research from around the globe in this field.

Manual of Natural Veterinary Medicine, Science and Tradition

Manual Of Natural Veterinary Medicine, Science And Tradition Pdf

By de Susan G. Wynn and Steve Marsden

Manual of Natural Veterinary Medicine: Science and Tradition PDF provides users with an understanding of complementary and alternative treatment options for more than 130 common disease states. A practical manual, it describes a variety of possible approaches to small animal disorders. Concentrating on nutrition, herbs, traditional Chinese medicines, and physical therapies, the authors present both tradition- and evidence-based therapies for disorders not always responsive to conventional therapies. Each monograph-style discussion of natural therapies for disorders common to specific body systems presents therapeutic rationales with the goals of treatment, alternative therapies with conventional bases, paradigmatic options, and authors’ suggestions from which they’ve experienced success. Key references are also included at the conclusion of each chapter.

  • Presents new and alternative therapies with scientific support, encouraging veterinarians explore new therapies with confidence.
  • Helps veterinarians develop treatment plans – a vast improvement over large texts that simply introduce the therapies.
  • Clearly explains esoteric concepts of traditional Chinese medicine in updated language.
  • Practical, user-friendly pocket manual format allows for quick access in the clinical setting.
  • Chapters are organized logically by body system and disorders are alphabetized within each chapter.
  • Each body system chapter includes a case report that describes the history, physical examination, assessment, treatment, and outcome of a specific patient to further illustrate how to develop a treatment plan.
  • Each appendix offers practical backup for designing treatment plans, from homemade diets and Chinese food therapy to oral herb doses and a valuable herb cross-reference table.
