Uses of Terbutaline

  • Bronchodilation.
  • Maintenance of heart rate in animals with sick sinus syndrome.
  • Use with caution in patients with diabetes mellitus, hyperthyroidism, hypertension or seizure disorders.

Dose of Terbutaline in Dogs and Cats

Dogs:

  • Bronchodilation: 1.25–5 mg/dog p.o. q8–12h, 0.01 mg/kg i.m., s.c., i.v. q4h.
  • Bradyarrhythmias: 0.2 mg/kg p.o. q8–12h.

Cats:

  • Bronchodilation: 0.312–1.25 mg/cat p.o. q8–12h, 0.01 mg/kg i.m., s.c., i.v. q4h.
  • Bradyarrhythmias: 0.625 mg/cat p.o. q8–12h.

Side Effects of Terbutaline in Dogs and Cats

  • Fine tremor, tachycardia, hypokalemia, hypotension and hypersensitivity reactions.
  • Administration i.m. may be painful.

Contraindications of Terbutaline in Dogs and Cats

  • Increased hypokalemia risk with high doses of terbutaline when given alongside theophylline or high-dose corticosteroids.
  • Elevated risk of cardiac arrhythmias when terbutaline is used with digitalis glycosides or inhalational anaesthetics.

  • The presence of other sympathomimetic amines may heighten the risk of adverse cardiovascular effects.
