Overview

  • Grapiprant is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medication.
  • It is an EP4 receptor antagonist; usually, this receptor binds PGE2 to cause pain and inflammation associated with osteoarthritis.

Uses of Grapiprant

  • Management of mild to moderate pain caused by osteoarthritis in dogs >9 months of age.

Dose of Grapiprant in Dogs and Cats

Dogs:

2 mg/kg once daily.

Cats:

Not authorized for use in cats

You Should Give:

Side Effects of Grapiprant in Dogs and Cats

  • vomiting
  • soft-formed stools
  • diarrhoea
  • inappetence.
  • In very rare circumstances, haematemesis or haemorrhagic diarrhoea was recorded following clinical usage post-authorisation in the USA.

Contraindications of Grapiprant in Dogs and Cats

  • Mild drops in blood albumin and total protein, most typically within the reference range, have been recorded in dogs treated with grapiprant but were not related with any clinically important findings.
  • Use with caution in dogs suffering from pre-existing liver, cardiovascular or renal dysfunction or gastrointestinal disorders.
  • The EP4 receptor is involved in ulcer healing in the GI tract and is prominent in cardiac tissue, the therapeutic significance of this is uncertain.
  • The safety of the veterinary medicinal product has not been proved in dogs <9 months of age and in dogs weighing <3.6 kg.
  • It is not permitted for usage in cats.

Some Notes:

  • The concurrent use of grapiprant with other anti-inflammatory agents, such as NSAIDs and steroids, has not been studied and should be avoided.
