Uses of Sevelamer hydrochloride

  • Reduction of serum phosphate in azotaemia.
  • Hyperphosphatemia contributes to chronic renal failure progression.
  • Phosphate-binding agents are reserved for cases where low phosphate diets fail.
  • Regularly monitor serum phosphate levels every 4–6 weeks.
  • Adjust medication dosage to achieve target serum concentrations.
  • Be aware that these agents may hinder vitamin absorption, notably vitamin K.
  • Consider monitoring prothrombin time due to potential vitamin K interference.

Dose of Sevelamer hydrochloride in Dogs and Cats

Dogs, Cats:

  • Chronic kidney disease: 30–40 mg/kg p.o. q8h, titrated to the desired serum phosphate concentration.
  • Should be given with meals and at least 1 hour before or 3 hours after other medications.
