Dogs, Cats:
- Euthanasia: 80 mg/kg in debilitated animals, up to 120–160 mg/kg in younger and fitter animals, rapid i.v. injection.

- Narcotic excitement may be seen in agitated animals.
- Agonal gasping is sometimes seen.
Contraindications of Pentobarbital (Pentobarbitone) in Dogs and Cats
- Should not be given i.m. as it is painful and slow to act.
- Do not use solutions intended for euthanasia to try to control seizures.
Some Notes:
- Antihistamines and opioids increase the effect of pentobarbital.
- Strain animals to prevent narcotic excitement.
- Prefer intravenous (i.v.) administration for euthanasia drugs.
- Consider intraperitoneal if i.v. is challenging.
- The intrathoracic route is a last resort due to lung injection risks.
