- Directly toxic to Leishmania and also enhances T cell and macrophage activation.
Uses of Miltefosine
- Treatment of canine leishmaniosis leads to a substantial reduction in the parasitic load without complete elimination (similar to other treatment strategies).
Dose of Miltefosine in Dogs and Cats
Dogs:
- Leishmaniosis: 2 mg/kg p.o. q24h for 28 days (it is particularly important that the full course is completed and given with allopurinol).
Cats:

You Should Give:
Side Effects of Miltefosine in Dogs and Cats
- Moderate and transient vomiting and diarrhoea are very common and can last up to 7 days.
- The side effects do not affect the efficacy of the product and do not require
discontinuation of treatment or dose change. - Overdoses may produce uncontrollable vomiting.
Contraindications of Miltefosine in Dogs and Cats
- Do not use during pregnancy, lactation or in breeding animals.
Some Notes:
- Nearly as effective as the allopurinol/meglumine antimonate protocol with fewer serious side effects.
- A Special Treatment Authorization is required to obtain this product (it is authorized for veterinary use in Spain and Germany).
- It is recommended to pour the product on to the animal’s feed to reduce digestive side effects.
- Allopurinol is recommended as an adjunctive treatment and should be continued
after the course of miltefosine is complete.
