Human-Canine Collaboration in Care: Doing Diabetes

Human-Canine Collaboration in Care: Doing Diabetes

Human-Canine Collaboration In Care: Doing Diabetes Pdf

By Fenella Eason

Human-Canine Collaboration in Care: Doing Diabetes PDF. Adopting an anthrozoological perspective to study the participation of non-human animals in regimes of care, this book examines the use of canine scent detection to alert ‘hypo-unaware’ individuals to symptoms of human chronic illness. Based on ethnographic research and interviews, it focuses on the manner in which trained assistance dogs are able to use their sense of smell to alert human companions with Type 1 diabetes to imminent hypoglycaemic episodes, thus reducing the risk of collapse into unconsciousness, coma or, at worst, death. Through analyses of participant narrations of the everyday complexities of ‘doing’ diabetes with the assistance of medical alert dogs, the author sheds light on the way in which each human-canine dyad becomes acknowledged as a team of ‘one’ in society. Based on the concept of dogs as friends and work colleagues, as animate instruments and biomedical resources, the book raises conceptual questions surrounding the acceptable use of animals and their role within society. As such, this volume will appeal to scholars across the social sciences with interests in human-animal interactions and intersections. It may also appeal to healthcare practitioners and individuals interested in innovative multispecies methods of managing chronic illness.

Avian Influenza Etiology Pathogenesis and Interventions

Avian Influenza Etiology Pathogenesis and Interventions

Avian Influenza Etiology Pathogenesis And Interventions Pdf

By Salomon Haugan and Walter Bjornson

Avian Influenza Etiology Pathogenesis and Interventions PDF. Avian influenza, sometimes avian flu, and commonly called bird flu, refers to “influenza caused by viruses adapted to birds.” Of greatest concern is highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI). These influenza viruses occur naturally among birds. Wild birds worldwide carry the viruses in their intestines, but usually do not get sick from them. However, avian influenza is very contagious among birds and can make some domesticated birds, including chickens, ducks, and turkeys, very ill. Infected birds shed influenza virus in their saliva, nasal secretions, and feces. Susceptible birds become infected when they have contact with contaminated secretions or excretions or with surfaces that are contaminated with secretions or excretions from infected birds. The risk from avian influenza is generally low for most people, because the viruses do not usually infect humans. However, confirmed cases of human infection from several subtypes of avian influenza infection have been reported since 1997. The spread of avian influenza viruses from one ill person to another has been reported very rarely, and has been limited, inefficient and unsustained. This important book gathers the latest research from around the globe in this field.

Manual Of Natural Veterinary Medicine, Science And Tradition Pdf

By de Susan G. Wynn and Steve Marsden

Manual of Natural Veterinary Medicine: Science and Tradition PDF provides users with an understanding of complementary and alternative treatment options for more than 130 common disease states. A practical manual, it describes a variety of possible approaches to small animal disorders. Concentrating on nutrition, herbs, traditional Chinese medicines, and physical therapies, the authors present both tradition- and evidence-based therapies for disorders not always responsive to conventional therapies. Each monograph-style discussion of natural therapies for disorders common to specific body systems presents therapeutic rationales with the goals of treatment, alternative therapies with conventional bases, paradigmatic options, and authors’ suggestions from which they’ve experienced success. Key references are also included at the conclusion of each chapter.

Avian Disease Manual 7th Edition

Avian Disease Manual 7Th Edition

By M. Boulianne

Avian Disease Manual, 7th Edition PDF. The Avian Disease Manual has become the best selling publication of the AAAP. Its success is likely due to its ability to deliver at a reasonable cost, concise yet complete information on commonly encountered diseases affecting poultry. It has become an educational staple to North American veterinary and poultry science students, to those interested in avian diseases, and a most useful reference in developing countries.

The manual is divided in various chapters grouping diseases by agent (viral, bacterial, fungal, etc…). Within each chapter, diseases are listed alphabetically and the addition of an index  further helps the reader to quickly locate the required information. The Appendix contains tables, each of which lists the most common diseases of a single body system. Various tables let you quickly compare diseases at a glance. This edition contains two new tables: diseases of the ducks and diseases of the upland game birds, to cover a wider spectrum of avian species. A poultry drug use list is also provided as a general guide. Also new to this manual is a chapter ‘’How do we investigate a sick flock?” The necropsy chapter includes the differential diagnosis procedure which goes on when a post-mortem examination is being performed. Last, the 7th edition includes more photos than previous editions and photos are included in the text and can be found after each disease section.

Veterinary Comparative Hematopathology

Veterinary Comparative Hematopathology PDF

Veterinary Comparative Hematopathology

Veterinary Comparative Hematopathology Pdf

By Victor E. Valli

Veterinary Comparative Hematopathology PDF. Hematopoietic neoplasms are the most common animal tumors for which chemo- or radiation therapy are now given. New research, information, and images unavailable in any previous publication now make it possible to examine these diseases, categorize for treatment, and in some cases ascertain the impact on survival.

A ground-breaking book in veterinary medicine, Veterinary Comparative Hematopathology is a heavily illustrated comprehensive reference on hematopoietic neoplasms in domestic and laboratory animals. The book enables veterinary pathologists and oncologists to provide more specificity in both diagnosis and therapy, and will serve as a seminal reference for future work in the field.

The book offers a unique comparative approach based on the WHO classification of these tumors in humans. Known animal tumors are described and compared to their counterparts in humans. Those tumors now defined in humans but without a recognized animal counterpart are described in the human context, thus better facilitating future identification in animals.

  • Ground-breaking book in veterinary medicine
  • Over 1400 color images
  • Comprehensive reference for veterinary pathologists and oncologists
  • Unique comparative approach makes this a seminal text on animal tumors
