Atracurium: Uses, Dosage and Side Effects

Overview

Atracurium inhibits the actions of acetylcholine at the neuromuscular junction by binding competitively to the nicotinic acetylcholine receptor on the post-junctional membrane.

Uses of Atracurium

  • Neuromuscular blockage during anesthesia.
  • To improve surgical access through muscle relaxation, to facilitate positive pressure ventilation, or for intraocular surgery.

Dose of Atracurium in Dogs and Cats

Dogs, Cats:

0.2–0.5 mg/kg i.v. initially, followed by increments of 0.2 mg/kg.

You Should Give:

Side Effects of Atracurium in Dogs and Cats

  • Can precipitate the release of histamine after rapid i.v. administration, resulting in bronchospasm and hypotension. ( Diluting the drug in normal saline and giving the drug slowly i.v. minimizes these effects. )

Contraindications of Atracurium in Dogs and Cats

  • Do not administer unless the animal is adequately anesthetized and facilities to provide positive pressure ventilation are available.

Some Notes:

  • Neuromuscular blockade is more prolonged when atracurium is given in combination with volatile anesthetics, aminoglycosides, clindamycin, or lincomycin.
