A derivative of codeine that acts as an antitussive<\/strong> and has mild sedating<\/strong> but no analgesic properties.<\/li>\n
It depresses the cough reflex<\/strong> by acting on the cough centre in the CNS.<\/li>\n
It has a lower potential than codeine for inducing dependence.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
Uses of Pholcodine<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Cough suppression<\/strong> is where the cause of the cough cannot be removed and the coughing is becoming detrimental to the animal\u2019s health (e.g. in chronic bronchitis, tracheal or mainstem bronchial collapse).<\/li>\n
It is ineffective in respiratory tract infections in humans and unlikely to be effective in kennel cough in dogs.<\/strong><\/li>\n
In humans, it is effective in reducing the cough associated with lung tumours.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
